BASF Kids` Lab
Wednesday, July 02, 2008
BASF, KTPC and Malaysia`s Ministry of Education are teaming up to host the BASF Kids` Lab event for the first time in Kulim.

The event is to be held at the Kulim Golf and Country Resort from 2 July – 3 July, 2008. It targets more than 400 students from 18 schools in Kulim. A one-day seminar for Science teachers will run concurrently with the Kids’ Lab.

“I’m glad that KTPC has this opportunity to collaborate with BASF (Malaysia) for this CSR program. Both companies are heading towards molding a more successful generation for the future. Instilling the love of science and technology, especially applied chemistry among our students is a laudable effort when the latter could fill the needs of hi-tech industries in Kulim Hi-Tech Park. We are also glad that BASF has extended their invitation to our adopted primary schools for this programme,” said Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Ahmad Shukri Tajuddin, Group CEO, Kulim Technology Park Corporation Sdn Bhd, who will be officiating the BASF Kids’ Lab event.

“It is our key objective to help children understand how chemical substances can be harnessed to enhance our everyday life in many ways,” said Mr. Yee Boon Yeow, Managing Director of BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. “We hope the interactive approach, with easy-to-understand explanations, can kindle a strong interest in these young participants about the wonders of chemistry.”

As part of BASF’s sustainable development program, a total of three experiments will be conducted by the primary school students under the supervision of a group of undergraduates. These undergraduates are groomed by BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd under a ‘Train the Trainers’ program.

The experiments will demonstrate the relevance of chemistry in our daily lives. One of them will showcase the applications of super-absorbents in hygiene products such as diapers and how the materials can absorb liquids up to 1,000 times its weight. In another experiment, the use of activated charcoal in wastewater treatment to remove organic contaminants will be demonstrated. There will also be a lab experiment featuring the moisturizing effects of body lotion.

This event is held in Kulim Golf and Country Resort to provide a different environment for the school children. Invitations were extended to the Kebangsaan, Chinese and Tamil schools, including SK Kulim, SK Lunas Jaya, SK Taman Hi-Tech, SK Taman Kenari, SK Taman Ria, SJK (C) Chong Cheng, SJK (C) Hwa Min, SJK (C) Kelang Lama, SJK (C) Kong Min, SJK (C) Shang Cheng, SJK (T) Kulim, SJK (T) Ladang Bukit Mertajam, SJK (T) Ladang Sungai Ular, SJK (T) Ladang Victoria, SJK (T) Ladang Wellesley, SK Dato’ Haji Zainuddin, SJK (C) Serdang and SJK (T) Ganesar.

Mr. Yee said that this aims to promote the learning of science among school children in a fun and engaging way, in alignment with the longstanding objectives of the Ministry of Education in Malaysia.

“Teachers play an important role in nurturing the students. Therefore, we are reaching out to the teachers, drawing upon their innate creative talents to be fully utilized in the science classroom,” he added.

Thirty-five teachers from thirty-five different schools will participate in this specially designed seminar by 2 experienced trainers appointed by BASF. The teachers will have hands-on experiences on how they can utilize their creativity to enhance the teaching-learning experience. In addition, the aim of this seminar is to build a sense of camaraderie among the science teachers participating, with the intention of motivating them to be willing to explore and to be open to new ways of teaching.
