Infineon launches Malaysia power semiconductor fab Tuesday, September 12, 2006
SINGAPORE — German chip maker Infineon opened its first power semiconductor fab in Asia Tuesday (Sept. 12), pledging to hire up to 1,700 workers at the new facility.

The $1 billion plant in Malaysia's Kulim Hi-Tech Park will churn out up to 100,000 200-mm wafer starts a month, Infineon Infineon said in a statement.

The factory was built in only 12 months, reaching equipment-ready status in February and moving to volume production in August.

The plant will produce energy-efficient power and logic chips for the industrial and automotive markets, including Infineon's IGBT and SMART-Power lines, which are deployed in car engine and lighting control systems.

Infineon President and CEO Wolfgang Ziebart said the new fab represented 'an opportunity to address the world's growing demand for more efficient power controls in industrial, computing, and household appliances.'

The company expects rising energy prices to propel the growth of the market for power semiconductors.

Infineon's decision to locate the facility in Kulim was a big win for the Malaysian government, which in August unveiled plans to transform the state and the neighboring island of Penang into a semiconductor industry hub. Penang and the Kulim have attracted several technology companies, including Intel, Aviza, Celestica and Fuji Electric.
