Kulim Hi-Tech Park wooing biotech firms |

KULIM: Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP), the fourth cyber centre in the country to receive MSC Malaysia Cybercity status this year, could potentially attract biotech companies, Multimedia Development Corp Sdn Bhd (MDEC) chief executive officer Badlisham Ghazali said.
KHTP's advanced IT infrastructure could attract investments not only from wafer and integrated circuit design companies but also from companies in the biotech sector, he said.
Badlisham was speaking to StarBiz after the launching of KHTP's MSC Malaysia Cybercity status by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi recently.
The new status allows KHTP to enjoy the same priorities and guarantees spelt out under the 10-point MSC Malaysia Bill of Guarantees.
This year, MDEC also endowed MSC Malaysia Cybercity status to cyber centres such as KL Sentral, Melaka International Trade Centre, and Menara MSC Cyberport Johor.
“With the status, KHTP can now compete even more aggressively internationally for overseas investments.
“The management also needs to play an aggressive role in roping in new investments,” he said.
Badlisham said KHTP fulfilled the MSC Malaysia Cybercity criteria in 2000 and had since applied for MSC status.
“The approval was given by MDEC in 2004,” he said.
Infineon Technologies (Kulim) Sdn Bhd managing director Tan Soon Hee said he expected that with the new status, KHTP would attract more peripheral industries to support multinational corporations.
“We also expect further improvements in the infrastructure of KHTP,” he said.
