The Multimedia Super Corridor Cyber Town at the Kulim Technology High Park (KHTP) to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Friday is expected to give Kulim town a new facelift making it a destination for high-tech investment in the northern part of the country..
The 1,440 hectare area, with a chain of information technology facilities generated by the MSC, is the second cyber town in the north and complements the MSC cyber town in Bayan Lepas, Penang.
Kulim Technology Park Corporation Bhd (KTPC) Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ahmad Shukri Tajuddin said the KHTP Malaysia MSC cyber town, which would be a satellite town in the north, would have its own role.
'The MSC cyber towns at Bayan Lepas and KHTP will complement each other in meeting the needs of investors wanting to invest in the northern area and each has its own speciality and provides facilities for different types of industries,' he told Bernama.
He said the KHTP and Bayan Lepas MSC cyber towns could assist the Multimedia Development Corporation (Mdec) in realising the MSC chain in the country.
Since its inception 12 years ago, KHTP's focus has been on high-tech manufacturing industry, research and development (R&D), education and training in the field of technology and later changed to electronics and semi-conductor after it attained the MSC status in 2004, said Ahmad Shukri.
He said six companies with MSC status were currently operating at KHTP and expected the number to increase to 10 by the end of this year.
Besides attracting investors, the cyber town is also expected to encourage the local community and young entrepreneurs to open business in the industrial zone as support industries as well as provide service to multinational companies.
Ahmad Shukri said KHTP also provided opportunities for local small companies to obtain the MSC status and to operate near multinational companies to enable them to provide more efficient services.
'KHTP will be a place for gathering of ideas, innovation and activities for knowledge among the young in Kedah. We always strive to assist the state government in producing more young entrepreneurs skilled in technology,' he added.
Several zones there, including the housing area, will soon get to enjoy broadband facility.
There are 19 manufacturing companies which have generated investments of RM21 billion, 26 support companies, two research and development companies as well as 10 incubator-companies operating at KHTP, said Ahmad Shukri.
He said with more companies achieving the MSC status at KHTP, more skilled workers would be required to ensure their success.
KHTP provides employment for 13,000 people, 35 per cent of whom are professionals, he added.
