KULIM: Chipmaker Intel Corp opened its RM152mil Kulim Design and Development Centre in Kedah last Thursday.
The centre will be used in the design of microprocessors, chipsets, motherboards, server boards and customer-application microchips.
This will complement Intel’s current assembly/test and board operations here.
Containing 192,987sq ft of labs — about the area of two football fields — the centre is intended to employ 900 people, bringing Intel’s total number of employees in this town to more than 3,000.
“This Design and Development Centre, along with Intel’s continued work with the Malaysian Government to drive manufacturing and engineering activities, will strengthen the country’s economic competitiveness globally,” said Intel Corp president and chief executive officer Paul Otellini.
“The opening of the centre reflects the fact that Malaysia’s talented workforce has become increasingly integral to Intel,” he added.
Otellini flew in from the United States for the opening ceremony.
K.C. Yoon, managing director of assembly and test at Intel Malaysia, said the site, which initially supported just assembly, test and packaging activities, has dramatically increased its engineering focus over the last 10 years.”
The opening of the centre marks Intel’s 10th anniversary in Kulim and is the latest in a series of investments in Malaysia by the chipmaker, which now amounts to RM10.9mil in total.
Intel also announced an employee volunteer programme to support the local communities it serves across the country.
The Volunteer Matching Grant Programme (VMGP) encourages Intel employees to do volunteer work in the local schools.
