Fuji Electric (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is investing RM1 billion to set up another plant at Kulim Technology Park in Kedah to produce magnetic disks, which are used for hard disk drives (HDD) in computers.
The RM1 billion investment will include the lease of a 30-acre parcel of land for 60 years. The 120,000 sq meter-plant is scheduled to be completed by December this year. It will Fuji Electric group's single largest overseas investment.
Prior to this, Fuji Malaysia had invested a total of RM960 million in three factories producing aluminum substrate and magnetic disks at the Kulim Technology Park.
Fuji Electric Device Technology Co Ltd president Akira Takai said the plant would more than double Fuji Electric Malaysia's production of magnetic disks from three million pieces to 6.4 million pieces a month.
He said this was part of Fuji Electric Device’s aim to increase their total magnetic disk production capacity from seven million pieces to 13 million pieces per month by 2007.
Speaking to reporters after the lease signing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on March 31, Akira said with the new plant, 50% of Fuji Electric’s magnetic disks would be produced in Malaysia.
“I am proud to say that the investment in Fuji Electric Malaysia is the biggest overseas investment, not only to Fuji Electric Device Technology, but also in the whole Fuji Electric group,” he said.
Akira said Fuji Electric Malaysia expects its revenue to grow by 60% this year from the RM500 million it achieved last year as a result of increased demand from South Korea, Japan and the US as well as the increase in magnetic disk production.
He said worldwide growth for HDD market is expected to be at 7% in the personal computer market and more than 30% in the consumer electronics market between 2005 and 2010.
