Intel Poised For Another Expansion in Malaysia |

Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, and a leading manufacturer of computer networking and communication products, has once again reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to Malaysia as an investment location.
On 8 December 2005, Intel Chairman, Datuk Dr. Craig Barrett, announced the company's expansion plans for an additional Intel assembly and test site and a design and development centre in Kulim. He added that the US$230 million project will generate around 2,000 job opportunities to the region.
Datuk Barrett had earlier called on the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato' Seri Radidah Aziz to inform her of the proposed project.
According to Datuk Barrett, Malaysia has become increasingly integral to Intel's growth as the country continues to provide a very conducive environment and offers a talented and capable workforce. The expansion of Intel's site reflects the company's long-term commitment in supporting Malaysia's economic development through technology.
The new facilities in Kulim will contribute globally to Intel's leading technology and platform development, supporting a variety of Intel products. The expansion in Kulim will include the creation of the Platform Compatibility and Ecosystem Validation Lab which will focus on focus on supporting Digital Home and Digital Offices platforms and Channel platform business.
Intel first established a plant in Penang, Malaysia in 1972 assembling and testing semiconductors and motherboards and communication / networking boards. Since then, the company has invested US$3 billion in Malaysia. Currently, it has five facilities in Penang, Kulim and Kuala Lumpur, employing 10,000 people. The company's operations in Malaysia are the largest outside the US.
Over the years, the company has diversified into the manufacture of various manufacturing and related services activities such as advanced integrated circuits, engineering, business development and marketing and supply chain services. The company is also involved in software development in the Multimedia Super Corridor in Cyberjaya.
