16 Dec 2009, First Solar New RM1.26 Billion Investments

First Solar announced today that they would be adding 8 more production lines to their existing 16 lines production facility in Kulim Hi-Tech Park solar panel manufacturing supersite. This translates into an additional investment of about RM1.26 billion (US$365) to the estimated project cost for the existing lines totalling RM2.2 billion (US$680 million).

First Solar began the construction of its first 4 plants in Kulim in April 2007 and ramped up their full capacity in those plants over a development area of 100 acres in July 2009.

First Solar said that they chose Kulim Hi-Tech Park because of its ready infrastructure, innovative incentives and express facilitation from the Malaysian Federal Government, Kedah State Government, and Kulim Technology Park Corporation, as well as, the availability of qualified workforce. The company now employs more than 2,500 workers in its Kulim plants.
